SCA Hygiene

When SCA Hygiene opened their new purpose built International distribution Centre (IDC) in Skelmersdale, utilisation of space was of paramount importance. They also required an electric counterbalance truck as opposed to a warehouse truck because they wanted the extra flexibility this would give them.

Barloworld's approachSCA-Hygiene_main.jpg

The superior turning radius of the Hyster J1.60XMT, 1600kg capacity, electric counterbalance proved to be the decisive factor in SCA's decision to go with Barloworld Handling. The new fleet of ten J1.60XMT trucks is employed in the dispatch area of the IDC that operates 24 hours a day 5 days a week, handling up to 25000 cases a day. It is divided up into four chambers that are fitted with push back and flow through racking up to 6000mm high that has 4000 pallet spaces and 3500mm aisles.

The 3300mm turning radius of the J1.60XMT's means that they are ideally suited to operate in these aisles. The trucks also have side battery extraction that means the batteries can be slid in and out of the trucks on rollers with no hoist needed which greatly increases the change time. In order to keep control of damage to the trucks each of them is fitted with PIN code access so that each driver will be recorded when they are driving thus preventing unauthorised use of the trucks.SCA-Hygiene_main2.jpg

Results

  • Excellent manoeuvrability within narrow aisles improves productivity
  • Damage is reduced due to PIN code access
  • Low downtime with side battery extraction
  • Highly reliable fleet supported by local Barloworld engineers

"We have been very happy with the level of service we have received from Barloworld as with a 24 hour operation we need our trucks to be operating as reliably as possibly. The Trucks we have are robust and reliable and so far we have been achieving acceptable uptime" SCA Hygiene
